The Summer of Love and The New 1960 Fashion

Who would have thought that baby boomers would change so much our society? After World War II, a period of economic growth and stability began, which created an enthusiastic atmosphere between parents in the forties and fifties. But, would they have started the baby boom in the first place if they knew that that generation of children would grow to develop a new culture based on drug consumption, rebellion and rock n’ roll? Even if they wouldn’t, we all know that the hippie movement has brought about very positive changes.

The hippie movement was a movement against war. They preached love and peace, changing our world with their beliefs and effort. They participated in non-violent demonstrations against Vietnam War and for human rights and accomplished many good results.

The hippie culture and values had a significant effect on many aspects of life, including music, art and literature, films and television as well as on fashion. In fact, their pacifist ideas and life style was greatly represented by their way of dressing, which did not take long to influence greatly the 1960 fashion.

Inspired by the Beat Generation, the hippie movement evolved to be an important influence on future generations. Their ideas of independence from the authoritarian orders of the time have initiated a turnaround in all aspects of life. Not only were there political changes, but also important innovations in 1960 fashion which remain today.

Before the hippie movement, 1960 fashion was characterized by mass-produced pieces of clothing and ornaments. According to their ideas and beliefs, hippies were against big corporation products, and for this reason they invented their own style. Hippie 1960 fashion was an expression of freedom from societal restrictions, and this is why it spread widely all around the world.

Hippies purchased their clothing from flea markets or made them on their own. This 1960 fashion was characterized by the use of unisex clothing. Peasant blouses, bell-bottom pants, jeans, vests, dashikis, were some of the usual hippie pieces of clothing worn by both sexes. They also wore sandals or went barefoot. Men wore long hair and beards, and women used no or little makeup, and sometimes no bra. Long full skirts were also common. Clothing motifs and style was mainly based on Native American, Latin American and African designs. Their clothes were colorful and bright, and tie-dying was very characteristic of their style.

Today, hippie 1960 fashion is still very influential. Rustic ornaments and accessories, such as necklaces and bags are pretty much in vogue. During the 60's, hippie 1960 fashion was not intended to look good. Their style was supposed to be a way to protest and rebel against corporations and restrictions. However, at present, hippie-like sandals look very beautiful, and long full skirts are very feminine. Long hair in men is just another option for hair-style, especially during the 90's, although today it still may be connected with rock n’ roll and a rebel character.

The hippie culture was also influential in home decoration. Hippies were very rustic in style. They didn't buy expensive furniture or accessories as they believed that people should not waste their time on looks and appearances. For this reason, they made their own cushions and blankets, and made use of pieces of wood and cloth to replace mass-produced commodities. In this way, hippies created a new home decoration style. This 1960 fashion persisted in time, and today is considered as a very stylish home decoration trend.

Hippies have open up doors for future generations. The freedom we enjoy to have a life style that we find most comfortable and pleasant without being judged is mostly thanks to them. For this reason, hippie 1960 fashion is highly accepted and is no more directly connected to drugs or rebellion as conservatives did in the past, but to an open personality.
